For Years In Trouble by Trounced For Years In Trouble by Trounced
These two are always in some kind of predicament. It surprises me, sometimes, what a mess they can get themselves into. :giggle: Although Errol I think has been a wanted pirate for many a year. In fact, disguising themselves to avoid arrest was probably his idea.

This is a picture elaborated from an idea sketch I did when I uploaded the first ever sketch dump I deviated of my two pirates a good year or so ago, Yo Ho Ho, at the very bottom of the page. I'm proud to have invested more into getting their disguises accurate for the time period in this one, and while Brandy is and always will be the forefront of this duo, it feels somewhat like Errol was the most fleshed out for this picture. Errol went through another bit of a design change, and I'm getting into the groove drawing him at last. :) He's gained a bit more attractiveness than his original design from my first drawings of him. lol He's still as bumbling as he ever was, though, and no one will ever take his beloved, oversized hat away from him.

Brandy, however, is the lightest, is centered, and is therefore the focal point in this, as it should be. Blue is so Brandy's color, too. In fact, they're both in shades of blue to sort of show they're together (that's often a theatre trick), and to allude to the idea that they're really the good guys here. Of course, I used red for their shadows, too, because they're not all good. :XD: Brandy apparently won't part with her gold jewelry, either.

I guess I could've worked on the background a bit more, but my main concern was the characters and the Wanted sign. It may be edited later on, because I want this to go into my portfolio. The paper was some old stuff I scanned off a book. =P

Sketched, colored with a mouse. Everything here belongs to ME.

No offense the wanted poster is way too clear. In reality it'd be a sketch or a painting.......this looks like a photo. Meh....call it an artists moment....just had to say something.

I don't like the gold cepter in his hand either it screams "LOOK AT ME!" ....which leads to the issue that has already been pointed out that hat of his and his face so clearly seen. So by him drawing attention through such an awful piece of ....well it's not jewelry but we'll say decoration? LOL he's drawing EVEN more attention to him!

lol Yes, I know in those times it couldn't have been a photograph, but because I wanted the two to be recognizable in the poster I just used a sort of "snapshot" of them. =D It's a bit funnier that way even if it's not perfectly realistic. And I guess I'm sorry that you don't like the desicions I made for Errol. D8 But it was all part of the humor that he stands out because of his extravagent personality despite trying to be in disguise.

With a hat so... how to put it?... extravagant, I'd be surprised if they can be "incognito" for more than a few minutes :P

Good job!

How much time do you spend on details?

The whole blue to pair them, the lighter color to make her a focal point, WOW. I totally saw it, but didn't recognize that you did that on purpose until I read the description. The red as a shadow! You know how much I love it when you do that. It's a total contrast effect! It makes the blue pop more.

The detail in Brandy's hair if phenomenal, but that is nothing to the detail on her fan! Holy cow! Metal is so hard to make look real, but the orb on the end of Earl's staff makes me want to take it from him and pop him in the tummy. I'm so happy to read that somebody noticed that accuracy in Brandy's clothing. That is such an important part that makes the whole piece. *sigh* yeah yeah, I gabber, but you deserve every bit of praise!

Now, you said you didn't spend that much time on the background. . . but I am still impressed by it. I think you should take credit where it is due. There is so much detail in this!!

XD How wonderful! I need to draw my pirate cats mooore *weeps* . I love the WANTED poster the most, it's so perfect. Too bad his hat is almost a dead giveaway...XD But hey, if people didn't realize Usagi was Sailor Moon....I'm sure people won't notice who they are. XDDDD

ahh, back when they were still Evelyn and [What's His Name]. :) I still really like a lot of the sketches on that dump, actually, they're really dynamic and expressive. *woohoo*

the thought you put into this that you mention in your description is crazy to me. :O crazyawesome, that is. Brandy and Errol look cautious and watchful, I don't think I've ever seen Brandy look quite like that before. using colour and such to draw the eye to where you want in the picture is the oldest trick in the book and I'm glad you're taking that into consideration! I think I spy Photoshop textures in the background - but used for good, not evil, so yay! :)

my one suggestion would be to blur the textures of that one wall a bit more so they recede into the background better (tip from layout/composition class! :O I love that class. I am learning so much from it). DON'T spend overly much time detailing the background, because its the characters that are your focal point here. as long as the background works in terms of tone and value, then that's actually fine. of course that doesn't mean do a cheap sloppy background either, but you catch my drift. happy medium. :) I actually think you could darken the poster especially a bit more, the paleness of Brandy's shirt on that is actually distracting from Brandy herself. maybe make it all yellowed and monochrome? on a sidenote, how DID you do that poster? it looks computer-rendered!!

Errol's hat seems to me as if it would work like Clark Kent's glasses. take them off and suddenly nobody recognises him. :giggle:

*smothers Swift with luff* Not just because of your lovely compliments, but your lovely critique too. That's a big deal, me saying the critique is lovely, 'cause I'm so miserable at taking critiques. :XD: But yours is wonderful; you actually give me something to work with in a helpful way. I'll definitely go back in and fiddle with blurring the background a bit more, because I think you're right about that. Since you mentioned it, too, I might do more to hide the fact I cheated with filters a bit better. :giggle:

The wanted poster was sort of just an assembly--I drew the picture of Brandy and Errol (obviously), colored it and everything, and the paper was a picture of old paper in a book my sister has that I scanned. I put the drawing on the paper, made them both the same yellow-y vintage color, flattened the image, and dragged it onto the actual picture of Brandy and Errol. When I got it in the spot I wanted it, I used the move tool to get the corner to fold up like that, and then put a slightly transparent layer underneath it to put the shadow. And that's about it. :)

:lmao: I think you're probably right about Errol's hat! Too bad he's too stubborn for his own good to take it off!

I am pretty horrible at taking crits myself, actually, which is why I don't crit unless the artist specifically asks for it. but hey, if you're going to put it in your portfolio, I figured you'd want to make it the best it can be. :) and I know that because I cheat with filters myself on occasion! hah!

wow, that is nuts to me. but it works! awesome job. :)

sidenote: did you see Foxer is back?! you guys can continue with your thread now, it's just as well I remembered she was away and didn't retire it!

Critiques have to be given to me gently; my skin is very thin, especially when it comes to my drawings. :giggle: I'm the same as you because of that, as well--I usually steer away from critiques in general unelss I can leave a well-rounded comment and be clear with my suggestions. But I here and now give you permission to critique any of my work, since you're in a unique position to know what I need to do (and it helps that I like you already XD).

It may seem more nuts than it is because I explained the process muddily, but thank you!

Yes, I did notice Foxer was back and I'd love to continue our old thread, but I feel a little bad since the setting is somewhat out of place now-- Salinger wouldn't want to go swim at the beach because it's hot anymore, so I'm not sure what to do. :/

likewise, I think especially when it comes to my personal work since I view that from an emotional standpoint rather than a technical one. <3 and not a prob, I'd be happy to give you whatever input I have to give, since it's for the future and all. I'm not one of those annoyingly anal people that points little nittygritty things out just for the hell of it. we people-that-make-pictures-move-and-all have to stand by each other! you can feel free to crit me anytime too. :)

actually, the setting of the thread doesn't change at all because time on a forum-based RP works independently of real time. in mine and Basi's thread with our kitties, Fjola is still in heat even though heat season is over. so you should be able to continue directly from the moment that you stopped. :)

That wanted poster is so awesome. Their expressions in the picture are a nice contrast to their more serious faces in disguise. Absolutely gorgeous detail on the clothes, especially Brandy's. It's obvious you put alot of work into getting them accurate.

Thank you! I have this book that goes through different fashion trends from Medieval times to, like, the eighties, and I had that opened to Brandy and Errol's era the whole time I was drawing their costumes. =P I'm relieved to know they look good, and accurate. =D :glomp:

ok, first thing I noticed? the awesome bone structure apparent in errol's face. seriously, each line looks so perfect there, gives him character and personality... and it's such a nice transformation of real anatomy that I couldn't HELP but notice it! :D

but beyond that, yes, the disguise is awesome, I love their body language, and I LOVE brandy in blue, and I bet that whole dress makes her look killer :P (oh please draw her fullbody at some point in the future! :) )

also - yes, if you rework this piece, you really need to make the bg look more integrated. I find it a bit distracting right now :P

Aww, thank you so much! Errol's bone structure has been a journey and a half trying to pin it down, so I'm so glad to know it looks good to you. And I love Brandy in blue, too. It didn't occur to me to do a full-body picture of her in the dress, but that's a fun thought! I just might!

And sorry about the background. ^^; Wow, I didn't know it was that bad. Why don't you tell me what needs work and your advice on how to fix it?

LOL, the bg is not that bad :P it's just that the sketchy pencil gives them a lot of depth and texture. and the background lacks exactly those things. to fix it just give it depth (turn it around at a bit of an angle, instead of straight on... it's the same rule as with a human face ;) ), show that those wooden things have a width and all :), and a bit more pencil-y texture. alternatively you could clean up pencil on the figures :P
