Just a quick update here because I want to ask you guys a couple of questions. =D Firstly, do any of you lovely little intelligent artists know what working the "hardlines" is? I've been offered a job at "Targét" (Target x3) and it's a position in what the clerk said was the "hardlines," and I was like "Okay!" but thinking "whut?" So I turn to you.

I'm also seeking out pictures of animals. I've been invited into a project of a friend of mine to illustrate characters, and he wants them to be a hybrid of humans and creatures. Otherwise it can be anything. I've decided to stay strictly away from popular animals to mesh with humans (canines, felines, birds, horses, etc), and trying to find interesting-looking animals that you wouldn't automatically think about. Like, I drew one who was half woman and half Lion Fish, which had a cool effect. So I'd love it if any of you could suggest a lesser-known or lesser-loved animal I could use. :)

OMG, speaking of half-human-half-animal characters, I came across a LiveJournal entry by accident and found a refrence to DA and my Kaydence Aspen deviation. The entry itself remonstrates that DA celebrates "bad art," or promotes blanket praise and no critique, or whatever, and my tiny little contest entry was chosen to sneer at by a responder. I quote:

"Ugh, a furry:
[link provided to the deviation]
(admittedly, one of the better ones, but it still brings a groan and a grimace)
"
[link]

A groan and a grimace? I could cry! :cries: I don't even draw furries. What the hell even IS a furry? Is Kaydence a furry? I thought she was an anthro!? Is there a difference? :O I don't want to feel guilty for drawing Kaydence! Phooey.

I rebuff this contention that DeviantART doesn't cultivate a supportive and challenging environment for artists. I know I've grown perceptibly my three years or so here, as I'm sure a lot of you can agree with, and it was because I was exposed to other artists and because of critiques. Truthfully, I'll admit here and now that I'm not the best at recieving critiques, but I've recieved it whether I like it or not, and more often than not I've needed it. And I've recieved critiques here. For a long time this was virtually the only place I recieved feedback. And I've managed to grow from it. DeviantART can't enforce manditory critiques, and it can't make it manditory for someone to accept critiques or not. And it can't referee how many people like a deviation or a deviant, even if in this guy's eyes it's "bad art." It's the same way in art school, and in the art world, and this guy can't assume art school somehow beats people into accepting critiques. Some people just won't, and it'll effect their art accordingly, and people will either like it or they won't. It truly isn't his problem. If you don't like the stuff on DeviantART, don't come to the site.

^^; I'm sorry. I needed to vent.

<EDIT:

I just needed to thank all of you for your comments on this matter. This was just insanely frustrating, and all of you were really sweet about it. I'm over it now--if he wants to feel big by belittling people's art, he can continue being a very small person. That's his business. It's not my audience I'm drawing for-- it's me. And I'm just lucky enough to have people like what I do, and like it enough to support me and help me grow through critiques, not by slapping it to the ground and saying it'll never be good. I need to remember it's friends like you guys I trust. Thank you.

Ahaha, thank you, too, for giving me a few ideas on what animals I can use! They're all awesome. =D Unfortunately, my friend has put the project on hold and now I'm working on something else with him, but I think I'll be drawing those characters anyway just because these animals are wicked, people. Wicked!

I still get critiques on my art here (though the last good one was over how my characters' beards didn't look bushy enough) and I am getting better at accepting them.

I don't believe there is a real difference between anthro and furries more than the connotations (anthro = yay, furry = nay). And honestly, I think this just comes from some people with fetishes to combining people and animals in a very poor way. That whole, one rotten apple will spoil the whole bushel (or however that saying goes...) thing.

Don't worry. Kaydence is not a 'furry.' She's a well designed character who happens to also be a cat. I mean, hell, think of like half of the old Disney stuff (i.e. The Rescuers) those guys were anthro! So no worries.

I dunno what "hardlines" is. X)

Try one with Jellyfish? That would be kinda cool! Maybe whales... heheh.

AND I wouldn't call Kaydence a furry. I think that guy has just seen way too much of the frontpage DA furries and he hasn't actually dug deep into the good DA stuff! And I agree with you! I think DA is a good place to learn and grow! I think I've grown quite a bit 'cause of this place! So, don't worry about it too much Hun! That guy just doesn't know what he's talking about!

i think it says something that this was said on a livejournal.
*aka not necessarily a relaviable opinion*

and last time i checked there are 60-70 something million people in the world.
just because one has has a negative view of your art doesn't mean much.
also, judging by the way he/she talks he is not being vety mature
*swiftwhippet:iconswiftwhippet: Apr 23, 2008, 9:30:02 PM
That person is most jerkish and rather ignorant, and I gave him/her a talking to on LJ for it. I hate that people will just judge art and artists for their subject matter and not see the thought and feeling that goes into it. No need to feel guilty for drawing Kaydence at all, if people are going to label you for it then they obviously can't see past OMG ITZ A FURRY to the thought - not to mention heavy research - that went into her. That's their problem, honey - not yours. I've been through similar being labeled a furry because I draw anthro characters on occasion - I think they're fun to draw! So what? Does that mean that my art is bad just because of what I draw?

(apparently, I needed to vent too. >.>;)

don't worry, you have right to vent.

furries are nasty anthromorphic characters that are often depicted having a sexual theme .. . . or. . . yah. gross stuff like that ha ha haha. brady can't stand any kind of anthro anymore becuase whenever he sees them he can only think 'FURRYEWWOMGGROZZZ' lol. he was shuddering when i was drawing my own piratey-cat-anthro ha ha ha.

im sorry they singled you out; thats pretty dang ironic considering its like the only anthro in your gallery! (well maybe theres a few more but none pop to mind, except maybe Aluinn ha ha ha)

:glomp:
and sorry i can't really help you with your job problem . .. i would be (am!!) scratching my head too :P

As far as I know, an anthro is like an animal that you put as a person, with facial expressions and all that (still looks more like an animal). And the furry is when you just cover a human being with... well, fur... I don't like at all some of the things written in that LJ

On the job front: "hardlines" refers to merchandise like hardware, housewares, automotive, electronics, sporting goods, health and beauty aids or toys (I used to work in retail).

Hope that helps, and good luck!
